Sodium bicarbonate, i.e. baking soda, should be an integral part of every household, without exception. It is an ingredient that can completely replace the chemicals you normally use for cleaning in the home and can be found in any supermarket. Today, we’re going to take a look at some handy tips that will come in handy when you want to clean your washing machine. Baking soda works:
- on limescale,
- for mould,
- as a bleach and stain remover.
Dangerous limescale and mould
Baking soda is able to prevent limescale build-up in the washing machine, but it is important to stress that it cannot be removed if it is already completely inside. It is therefore best to use baking soda in this case as a limescale prevention. If you put 250 grams of baking soda in the washing machine drum or detergent dispenser and run a normal programme, you will easily get rid of mould and bacteria.
One of the properties of baking soda is odor neutralization. It can be used both in hand washing and in the washing machine. For machine washing, just put 25 grams of baking soda with the detergent you usually use. For hand washing, you need to take an empty container, put 4 litres of warm water and add 200 grams of baking soda, shake and wait one day before washing the clothes.
Whitening and Stain Removal
Baking soda, among other things, is a great bleach, thanks to the abilities of sodium bicarbonate. Because of this, you can completely replace bleach this way and never have to spend big money on it again. Just use 250 grams of baking soda and the regular liquid detergent you use. Put both in the dispenser and see how beautifully white your laundry will be, even without unnecessary chemicals.
Need to remove the toughest stains from your clothes, bedding or other fabrics? Just make a baking soda-water based mixture and spread it on the affected area. Rub well and leave it for a few minutes. Then continue cleaning in the usual way, putting the dirty clothes in the washing machine on the programme that matches their type.
